ED partners, NDIS approved carers, have introduced a Complex Bowel Management course to deliver complex or high-intensity bowel care to our patrons safely. The NDIS (Quality Indicators) Guidelines, 2018, state that the providers must meet and comply with the NDIS Practice Standards.
Complex Bowel Care is a part of NDIS High-Intensity Support Activity, requiring a specialist level of support as a part of NDIS and home care packages. This is provided to the participant at risk of severe constipation or faecal incontinence, or a history of spinal injuries.
Through this course, the support workers will learn the following:
Infection control and personal hygiene maintenance
Knowledge of the basic anatomy of the digestive system
Understanding of stool characteristics indicating healthy bowel functioning
Observing and recording any symptoms of bowel habit changes
Understanding symptoms for intervention
Intervention techniques and options
Administering laxatives, suppositories, or enemas
Administering other non-routine medication
Maintaining hydration and nutrition requirements
To test their theoretical and practical knowledge, the participants will administer a mini-enema on a dummy.
A Certificate of Achievement from ED Partners, NDIS aged care providers, will be awarded upon completion.
